Outpatient Care

Microscope surgery can be done in an outpatient basis. Most people do not need to stay overnight in a hospital. The patient will need a companion to assist with travel and home care after outpatient surgery. Follow up care by the surgeon is important. Intracapsular Surgery

Intracapsular surgery involves removing the entire lens, including the capsule through microscope surgery. In the past, cataracts were removed by intracapsular surgery in which the entire lens and lens capsule were removed. Intracapsular surgery is rarely, if ever, used today. It is more difficult and has a higher rate of complications than extracapsular procedures.

Extracapsular surgery is a procedure which consists of undergoing a microscope surgery to remove the lens, but leaving the back half of the capsule, or the outer covering of the lens, whole. High frequency sound waves, through, phacoemulsification may be used to soften the lens to help removing it through a smaller cut.
